"We practice asana in order to create an environment of quiet and ease in the body so that the mind can also dwell in quiet and ease." - BKS Iyengar

About
MATTHEA SCHUMPELT, RYT-200, RYF-200
Hi, I'm Matthea, owner and instructor of Yoga Magnificat. I am registered with the Yoga Alliance as a RYT-200, having attained my teaching certification in 2016 from YogaFaith (Northwest Christian Yoga Academy) under the wise instruction of YogaFaith founder, Michelle Theilen and Off the Mat and Into the World mentor, Carrington Jackson . Since then, I have taught a variety of classes, including beginner's yoga, vinyasa, relaxation, seniors and chair classes inspired by different styles such as Iyengar, American Power Yoga, Yin and Hatha.

My Teaching Style
When you come to one of my classes, you'll find that I focus primarily on pose alignment and equanimity (ease of mind and body) as two inseperable elements. As BKS Iyengar states, "we practice asana [yoga postures] to create an environment of quiet and ease in the body so that the mind can also dwell in quiet and ease."  So while I will encourage you to cultivate equanimity, I also offer variations to help you find efficient use of your body through verbal and physical adjustments.

Shouldn't yoga just be about feeling good? Yes! But I also know that we all carry physical baggage that makes us repeat unhelpful habitual movements, even as we do yoga. As such, I rely heavily on yoga anatomy, kinesiology, Iyengar and adapted forms of physical activity for special populations to inform my teaching. If I come around to adjust you, my intention is not to point out that you are doing anything wrong: It is to guide you out of compensating movement patterns and into greater understanding of your body. With this awareness, yoga can make lasting change from the inside out.

And as we are all uniquely and wonderfully made, I don't believe that yoga is "one size fits all." This is the heart of my teaching: To help people of ALL shapes and sizes create their own practice by considering how yoga can be modified to fit an individual, rather than making the individual fit the yoga.

My (Christian) Yoga Story
A few years ago, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Soon after, she was given 6 months to live. During that period, I talked to God a lot more. I cried. I wept. I began reading the Bible (often, the book of Psalms) on my yoga mat. In child's pose, I knelt over God's words and let them sink into me. Holding on to His words, I began to move. Yoga + Christian meditation became a natural combination.  As a follower of Jesus, this is sometimes what my home practice looks like. (Read the story behind my studio name, Yoga Magnificat)  Overall, it's my favorite way to get stronger and to release stress.

How you approach yoga may look very different, and that's perfectly fine. Why any individual comes to the mat is personal, valuable and significant. I currently teach non-faith classes, but am offering donation-based Christ-centred classes once a month as an opportunity for others to experience the spiritual discipline of Christian meditation. I hope you find a class that fits your needs. If not, I welcome your input to help me make future classes better!

About the Yoga Space

Many thanks and much gratitude do I owe my family at Sovereign Community Church for allowing me to teach all my yoga classes in our beautiful sanctuary.  (My husband Joash Schumpelt is the pastor of said church, in case you're wondering!)

Full of light from big windows looking upon an expansive field and community garden, the sanctuary serves multiple functions, from worship space, dining hall and youth group centre to Community Supported Agriculture pick-up ( La Ferme Terre Partagee ), community kitchen and now yoga studio!

Belonging to the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), SCC is located in the Douglastown area of Miramichi, NB and is a Gospel- and prayer-centred church. SCC bears a passion to see Christ bring restoration and healing to the city of Miramichi and its people. In a nutshell, we are Biblically conservative and socially active.
